For generations people have enjoyed the beauty, durability and longevity of soapstone, and now you can as well. The rediscovery of soapstone has been sweeping the country on television home shows as well as in magazines. You may have seen soapstone featured recently on tv shows or lauded in  Better Homes & Gardens Kitchen and Bath Ideas, or Inspired House to name a few.

The reasons for soapstone's popularity is its' durability and good looks. Soapstone is not a "fussy" stone and fits into a family's busy lifestyle. Practically indestructible, soapstone won't burn or stain, requires very little maintenance, and adds value and elegance to any home building project.

Soapstone fits perfectly when it comes to achieving a “rustic” or “old fashioned” look. It also integrates well with modern designs, and is offered with many edge treatments and surface finishes. Go to the SOAPSTONE EDGE PROFILE page  to see the available profiles.

What is Soapstone
Soapstone is made up of mineral deposits created by nature and quarried from the earth. The main mineral components in soapstone include talc, chlorite, dolomite and magnesite, giving a warm, soft feeling to the touch.

Soapstone has a unique soft color with light flowing veins. When cut, it oxidizes from light grey to dark charcoal in color. A protective coat of mineral oil makes its color even more dramatic.

History
For centuries, soapstone has been quarried and used throughout the world. Soapstone was traditionally used in colonial New England for fireplace hearths, sinks, countertops, and wood stoves.

Current Uses
In addition to soapstone’s traditional uses, it is currently used for stair treads, balusters, sills, island tops and mixing bowls. Because of its unparalleled heat retention characteristics, it is the perfect choice for cookware, cook tops, oven floors, masonry heaters and fireplace liners. After soapstone is initially heated from burning wood, pellets or coal, it slowly radiates the heat evenly for hours – even after the fire is out! Soapstone can also be used for carving and sculpture.

Durability
Practically indestructible,  Soapstone is an excellent alternative natural stone to use in place of granite or marble. Soapstone won't burn or stain and requires very little maintenance. Soapstones are inert, this means that acids and alkalis will not etch soapstone as they will other stones. For decades, soapstone has been used extensively in laboratories and science classrooms for sinks, flooring, and work surfaces. Its durable and dense composition make it ideal for these applications.

Durable, Easy Care Soapstone Countertops,
Backsplashes and Islands

Soapstone is a perfect choice for countertops, backsplashes, sinks with drainboards, and islands. Its’ durable and quite dense surface possesses all the beauty of granite or marble, with none of the drawbacks. Soapstone is inert. This means that acids and alkalis won’t etch soapstone as they will other stone surfaces. It is also impervious to temperature changes. Soapstone seams can be made tight, smooth and inconspicuous.

Taking care of soapstone is a breeze. We recommend applying a protective coat of mineral oil to all sinks and countertops upon installation. Mineral oil enhances the inherent natural veining characteristics and crystallization detail of the stone. If your soapstone becomes scratched, follow the easy restoration instructions below.

STEP 1 – Sanding Scratches
Most all scratches will disappear with a direct dab of mineral oil. To permanently remove a deep scratch, apply medium pressure to the scratched area with 80 grit sandpaper. A sanding sponge is recommended. The deeper the scratch, the more sanding will be needed.

STEP 2 – Oiling
After the scratch has been sanded out, you will need to apply a light coat of mineral oil to the sanded area. The mineral oil application should be repeated 2-3 times over a 2-3 day period to match the coloration of the rest of the stone.

Returned to it’s former beauty…
To maintain your soapstone use a damp cloth or sponge with cleanser for daily cleanings when needed. Oiling will enhance the luster and color of the stone, and restore that brand new look once again. Subsequent coats should be re-applied monthly.
